I don’t know anyone who does not have scars in this life. The unpredictability of life and its complex offerings make it impossible for any of us not to be scarred. It’s almost as though scars are a part of life, a given, if we want to truly live. What makes our scars beautiful is not so much how we tried to hide them or hide from them, but how they make us more beautiful. The Japanese design called wabi-sabi can teach us a lesson about the scars of life. Anything designed naturally by nature, no matter how out of line or irregular it looks, becomes the one thing that makes it beautiful. The blows of the storm on a tree, the rampage of the waves on the rock forming its lovely shape, and the battering of the cold temperature and scorching heat make up the magical colors of autumn. These natural scars make everything we see in nature look beautiful and pleasant to the eyes. The scars of life make you stronger. They are a testament to your resilience and strength of character. The Apostle Paul once said that no man must trouble him because he bore in his body the marks of the Lord Jesus Christ. He suffered and had been imprisoned as he followed Jesus and was literally scarred because of his passion and love for the Savior. "Has thou no scars?" asked Amy Carmichael, who spent her whole life in India rescuing little girls from temple prostitution. Could you have followed far if you have no scars? Scars are marks of faithfulness and strength of character. They mark our journey in this life, making us who we are. The scars make you who you are; they make you unique and different from the rest. Thank God for all your scars because they are what make you beautiful. Are you grateful for your scars?
