Choosing to be humble

There is one unforgettable painting I saw during a visit to the United States. It showed Jesus, wrapped in a simple towel, gently washing the dirty feet of His disciples. Knowing what I knew at the time about Jesus as the Son of the Living God, witnessing Him portrayed in such a humble, servant‑like act left a profound mark on me.

I often reflect on the depth of humility Jesus demonstrated when He came to earth. He left His heavenly kingdom and entered our limited, time‑bound world—an act that alone reveals His willingness to lower Himself and take on the restrictions of our human existence. Jesus, through whom all things were created and without whom nothing came into being, stepped into our world to reach us and rescue us from our deliberate disobedience. The sheer magnitude of this truth is staggering, and it often brings me to my knees. How could the mighty Creator of the heavens and the earth descend in such humility, becoming even the servant of men, choosing intentionally to wash His disciples’ feet to show us that a humble heart does not consider the task if it serves the purpose of love and mercy?

This example of humility humbles me in return. It reminds me that humility is a choice—an intentional act. God tells us He opposes the proud but gives more grace to the humble. Do you ever struggle to deliberately humble yourself?
