This One Thing

One thing is needful, Jesus told Martha, who was so busy serving in His presence that she missed the very purpose of being in His presence. Many times, in the busyness of our service to God and people, we forget the very reason we are doing it. The person of Christ is the one thing that is offered to each one of us. We can miss this “one thing” in the midst of the seemingly harmless forms of His presence—ministry, worship, doctrines. These aren’t wrong in themselves, but they are often the greatest competitors of our devotion to Jesus Himself.

Like Mary, we are urged to choose this one thing and reflect on how busy and distracted life has become, leading us to miss it. Like Martha, we have become preoccupied with many less important things and have missed the joy of knowing the person of Christ, the very reason for our service and ministry.

Today, ask yourself: Have I been so busy that I am failing to choose the one thing that is needful?
