True riches

I watched in silent wonder as I observed the simplicity of life that those living in the rural areas of Cambodia have. I can only take it to heart as I learn from the contrast I was seeing to that of the Western way of life. Yes, it was not comfortable. It was not sophisticated or glamorous. Yet their contentment with every little blessing they received each day taught me to reflect on what true riches really are. The smiles on their faces say it all. True riches are not about how many possessions or how much money you have. It is about how full your heart is, no matter how much you possess. When your heart is full, you are rich. The question is, how much will it take to make your heart full? Can you even find it in material possessions? Is it found in what this world can offer us? What is true riches? The Bible says, "If you have not been trustworthy in handling worldly wealth, who will trust you with true riches?" Worldly wealth, therefore, has been used to compare against true riches, and therefore worldly wealth cannot be the true riches. Here, Jesus wants to teach us that the way we handle worldly wealth can impact on how trustworthy we can be when it comes to true riches. The riches on this earth are not bad in themselves; the issue is the attitude of your heart towards this. What does power and wealth do to your heart? What does it reveal about what really is in your heart? The best test as to whether our heart knows what true riches are is when we can walk away from it all at a moment’s notice. How rich is your heart right now? Is your heart full?
