The perils of wanting more

More is a bittersweet word. We ask for more when we don’t feel satisfied. We want more of the things we believe can make us happy: more wealth, more possessions, and more beautiful things surrounding our existence. We may also desire more time, more stability, and more of the things we love. But what if one day, at the expense of wanting more, we end up exhausted and lonely? If we succumb to our never-ending desire for more, we may fall prey to a state of discontent and greed. It can overtake our thoughts and control our lives. The opposite is true of contentment and being happy with what we already have. This can be liberating, especially if you learn the secret of contentment. Someone who has all the luxuries in the world—a nice car, a mansion, a big bank balance, fame, and security—may not be able to sleep peacefully at night because of the weight of having all these possessions and the worry they bring. On the other hand, someone living in a jungle with barely anything but the roof over his head may sleep peacefully at night because there is nothing for him to worry about. The peril of wanting more can weigh heavily on us. Sometimes, it is best to learn to be content and to be grateful every day for all our blessings. The Bible speaks about godliness and contentment giving us great gain. Jesus has advised us not to worry about anything and that sufficient for this day are its own worries. For who knows what tomorrow may bring? Are you letting yourself fall prey to the dangers of wanting more?
