The most important things in life aren't things

What is the most important thing in this life? Sometimes we get carried away with our daily routines and responsibilities, and they just go on for us so fast, without considering whether what we're living for is really important. What matters most in this life? The Bible speaks about the things we cannot see. These are the things that we cannot touch, but they are the most important things. It admonishes us to seek those things which are above. The things that are unseen are eternal; they are permanent. The things that we can see are temporary. So the things in this life that we can see are the ones that never stay or last forever. But the things that will last are those that we cannot see. The changes that we cause in others when we impact their lives or influence them for good cannot be seen. Yet they are important. The everyday influence that a child sees from their parents is significant. The effect of the time you spend with your loved ones lasts. They have an impact on a growing child or the life of someone who needed your time. Someone might be struggling, and you are there to listen and support them. The effects of these actions are not seen. Yet they are the important ones. They are what matters in this life. We could spend most of our lives trying to chase riches and fame, or the things that will only stay here. Yet we could also spend our time in this life trying to make a difference in the life of one person, a few people, or maybe many. The things that we try to accumulate here—possessions or material wealth—will not last. They aren't the things that are important. Yet somehow, we try to work through a system that keeps us enslaved to wanting more of this stuff, more of the things that we think, if we can only give them to our loved ones, will make them happy. But if we sit down and analyse what we're doing and try to eliminate the things that are not really important, very few will remain. These are the things that we create that have a lasting impact on the lives of those we love. These are the times that we spend making memories with them, the time spent with our children who are longing for our attention. These are the moments when we allow ourselves to wonder at the beauty of God's creation, times of worship and prayer, time spent reflecting on our lives and meditating on the goodness of God. These are the important things. We cannot see them, but they are the things that matter most in this life. Are you working for the things that truly matter?
