Someone somewhere can only dream of what you have right now. How do you find joy in your present circumstances? How can you see the beauty in everything that surrounds you? Contentment is the equivalent of wealth; this is true riches. Those who have plenty can either choose to be content or to keep wanting more, in which case they will never be wealthy enough. The poor continue to desire what they do not possess. The rich can be like the poor if they keep wanting more. I have seen in my travels the great paradox of wealth. What are true riches? Real treasures cannot be found in this world. A lone, poor man in the jungle living simply and happily content with what he has is richer than one living in a mansion who cannot sleep at night worrying about his possessions or thinking about how to acquire more. Finding joy in what we already have is the key to contentment and happiness. Godliness with contentment is great gain. This means that the gain from contentment and having God at the center of one’s life is incomparable to the never-ending pursuit of wealth. When God said to Abraham, “I am your exceedingly great reward,” He meant that if we have God, we have everything we need and more. Have you found joy in what you already have? The secret is being grateful and finding reasons each day to be thankful for every little thing you have. Have you thanked God today for your life?
