Being humble, not proud

A painting of Jesus wrapped in a towel and washing the disciples' feet left a lasting impact on my heart many years ago. It was the most humbling image I have ever seen: the Son of God, through whom all things were made, the King of all kings and Lord of lords. To Him, all angelic beings bow down in heaven. He was the center of His kingdom. He was the Christ, the Son of the living God, and yet He was there in the form of a servant, washing the feet of His disciples. This is the greatest act of humility that I know. Washing feet was the lowest of all the duties of a servant during those days. The least among the servants were given this task. But the Lord Jesus Christ gladly took on the towel and washed the disciples' feet. Such humility and lowliness of heart! He Himself has said to come to Him, for He is meek and lowly in heart, and we can find rest for our souls. There is no rest in being proud; it is exhausting to deceive ourselves. When we are proud, we are deceiving ourselves, for pride is deceit hiding within.
When life humbles you, learn its lesson well. God resists the proud but gives grace to the humble. Looking at Christ's humility, it would be shameful to be proud. Yet, this is the most subtle form of all sins. Sometimes we don't even know it's inside our hearts! Always keep this picture of Christ in your thoughts. Learn from Him. He is meek and lowly in heart. Do you find it hard to perform a lowly task?
