You become what you consume

We often hear the saying, “You are what you eat.” This simply means that whatever we eat will reflect on our health and appearance. However, this concept extends beyond our physical health; it also applies to who we become, the personality and character we develop over the years, and the intellectual capacity we acquire. We don’t only consume food; we also consume media and social influences that have the potential to change us or alter our thinking. This occurs every single day, each time we allow the never-ending feeds on TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, or Twitter to entertain us and steal our precious time. As we aimlessly scroll down our screens, it sends signals to our brains and conditions us to be impatient, to look at information without analyzing what we see. It conditions our minds to accept information passively without critical thought, which can become dangerous over time. We are becoming what we regularly consume until we think the same way as influencers or parrot what the media says. You may not even be aware of whether what you are saying is your own opinion or just a repetition of what you have been hearing on television or on your social media feeds. God encourages us to think actively. The Bible says to fix your thoughts on what is true, honorable, right, pure, lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise. What are you consuming in your mind each day?
