How do we make sense of our daily routines? Every day when we wake up, we strive to work for something—something that can either stay with us or something that is temporary in nature. We spend our days and years working hard at jobs and responsibilities that might not be there forever. And yet, somehow, when we try to look back, we long for something that would have lasted—something we’ve done that would have made an impact on the people we love and those around us. We seek something that endures. In this life, we often go with the flow of things without realizing that our lives are made up of fleeting moments. And yet, we can make the things we do last for eternity. There are those we touch who can remain in our lives. Our lives can influence others. Every memory we create can endure and make an impact. So, every time we spend time with the people we love, we’re creating lasting memories that will stay with us. How many of the things we’ve done are actually permanent? How many of the things we’re doing right now hold lasting importance for us? What are the more permanent activities we engage in throughout our lives? The Bible says that we are to seek those things which are above, the things that are unseen. Because what we can see is temporary, while the things that are unseen are permanent; they are eternal. What does this mean? We enter eternity each time we choose to do something for the kingdom of God—something that will matter in someone’s life, something that will make an impact on another. Those things are not visible. We cannot even touch them, but they are lasting. Because what they change is the part of us that we do not see. They affect and touch the heart, the human spirit, which is more permanent. This body is temporary, and all the material things we accumulate will be left behind. These things will fade away. What lasts are the legacies we leave and the lives we touch while we’re alive. What are you living for? Are you investing all your energy, time, and money in things that are temporary?
