What do most of us have in common when it comes to what we all value? When all of life’s layers have been peeled off, the riches, prestige, power, reputation, and influence, what is left will be the one thing that truly matters in this life. When there’s a fire, we never rush back in to save a piece of our possessions; we risk our lives to save our loved ones from the fire. Jesus emphasized the value of one life, one soul to that of the whole world. Life is what matters most. When one is at the verge of death, the value of life becomes even more apparent. We hold on to it for as long as we can. Life is a gift from God, both this temporary life and the eternal life to come after. His gift of life through Jesus Christ is what matters most at the end of it all. Our assurance of Christ's forgiveness, living each moment with the people we love, and doing the things we enjoy and love, these are incomparable to riches and fame because there is no price attached to these. If we spend all our years trying to earn money or to accumulate wealth for the future we do not really know we have, we will be surprised when one day, we are sitting at a doctor’s office after receiving a devastating diagnosis. Life stops, and the peeling of its layers will begin to unfold. What matters most is what’s left after everything has been taken away. When the music stops, what have you got left?
