The one thing that is needed

God’s invitation is astonishing. He is inviting each of us to have a closer walk with Him, to have a relationship with the God who created everything—our Maker, our Lord, and Savior. This is a staggering invitation: to be asked to have such a relationship with the living God! For this, I can surely drop everything just to embrace this amazing privilege! Who wouldn’t?

We walk with Him each day, and we are assured of His abiding presence. He takes care of all our needs and concerns. This is what Mary knew when she dropped everything to listen at the feet of Jesus. But Martha was too busy, and Jesus told her that only one thing was needful, which Mary has chosen and will not be taken away from her. What a reminder to all of us! Only one thing is needful. What is this one thing? When Jesus asked His disciples if they would also leave Him like all the others, they said, “Where shall we go? You have the words of eternal life!” This is something we should also learn to grasp: the one thing that’s needful is the very Word of God, which is the source of life. Jesus said man shall not live by bread alone but by every word that comes out of the mouth of God! This is amazing! Listening to God’s words is therefore the one thing that is needful, and His words are like eternal treasures inside us. They will not be taken away from us!
