Will it ever end? Our pursuit of happiness seems like a lifetime of constant tugging at our hearts. It knocks on our doors after every purchase, after each success, after indulging in pleasure, and after each journey; we need to pursue it again. On and on it goes until we no longer have the strength nor the years left to continue. We end our lives exhausted and exasperated, having discovered that what we are chasing has no end. We then realize that our hearts can never find rest while running after these temporary things. Saint Augustine of Hippo cried out a very truthful discovery. The man sold everything he had and served the poor in his time. He exclaimed at the end of his life, finding his true happiness in God: “Thou hast made us for thyself, O Lord, and our heart is restless until it finds its rest in thee.” This emptiness inside your heart can only be filled with God Himself. A God-shaped vacuum lies empty in every man’s heart. Each one chases after promising solutions to satisfy a longing so deep that nothing on earth can fulfill it. A desire not of this world, for we are made for another world. Do you constantly chase after the things this world offers, promising happiness? Has your heart finally found its rest in God?
