A sense of wonder

When I was a kid, I used to love stacking stones. I was quite content in a corner by myself as long as I had stones around. I would happily arrange all the stones and pile them up beautifully. As my mother would recall, I was easy to look after as long as there were stones around me! This fascination with stones of all sorts gave me a sense of wonder when I looked at God’s creation. It gave me an unsatisfied curiosity. I thought it was the most childlike characteristic we ought to carry with us. I wondered at the spider's tenacity when they meticulously weave their own web, only to be squashed the next morning, and happily rebuild it again like nothing happened! I marveled at the snails and how they carry their own house wherever they go. God has made us to wonder at His marvelous creation. I believe it is the first step to learning how to worship. It introduces us to the knowledge of God in nature. It is like looking through a mirror and seeing how it reflects the wonders of God back to us. For since the creation of the world, the invisible things of Him are clearly seen, being understood through the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead.

To wonder at the beauty of everything that surrounds us—the ocean, the trees, the flowers, the mountains, and the lakes—they each declare to us a loving Creator. The heavens declare the glory of God. Every night, the stars seem to whisper to our ears, telling us the story of God’s magnificent creation! After all, the stars bear witness to everything under the heavens! Do you still marvel the way a little child does, or have you lost your sense of wonder?
